“Every case is a competition in which you have to deal with the rules of law in a sharp and creative manner and which calls on your strategic abilities.”
As a passionate litigator, Hans Koets focuses primarily on corporate law. He therefore deals extensively with procedural law. This is where know-how and strategy come together: the assessment by the court, the challenge by the defence, and the power of persuasion required. This fascinating combination was decisive for Hans in choosing to practise this profession.
During his years as a lawyer, Hans has gained extensive experience in fraud-related cases. Legal substantiation often does not suffice; for that reason he also calls in forensic experts in order to substantiate or refute a claim, since all the facts must be correct. He therefore actively goes in search of those facts.
“It’s very important not to just follow the client’s compass,” Hans believes. “As a lawyer, you have to demonstrate your added value.”
Thanks to this approach, Hans is frequently asked to advise by a wide range of companies. The diversity of the legal issues concealed within those companies continues to fascinate him.
After completing his law studies, Hans Koets worked as a lawyer in Nieuwegein for four years. In 1986, he founded the law firm of Köster en Smit, together with John Köster and Raymond Smit. Hans is also active outside of work; he plays hockey and enjoys running marathons.
